Week 7: Retelling stories we know

October 21-25
This week students heard me read Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you see? by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. Throughout the week we continued to review the sequence of the story, used pictures and a flannel board to retell the story. Oral story telling is an important literacy skill that builds fluency and vocabulary.

Students showed perseverance through colouring and cutting out the letter that their name begins with to place on our own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree. This work is part of our Alphabet inquiry and our unit on "I Am Unique."

We were visited by Ms. Watkins our Indigenous Education Learning Leader. She read a story called The Sharing Circle. Ask your child about the story and about how they felt about taking turns in our own sharing circle and how we could use this idea to solve problems.

Next week:
- Bat inquiry
- Dice math game
- Orange/black day Oct. 31st
- No school on Friday, November 1st (Professional Development Day)

Week 6: Can I sort?

October 15-18

This week students were demonstrating if they can sort. Students sorted by colour, size or by grouping the same item together.

Students love the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom so much that we have decided to create our own tree. Each student will decorate the beginning letter of their name to put up on the palm tree. Students can then practice naming the letters while looking at the tree.

We have introduced a new Exploration centre. Students use one of four fish that are different sizes and weave coloured ribbon through. This type of activity gives students an opportunity to work on their fine motor skills.

Thank you for bringing in apples for apple sauce. We were able to make a large pot. The students loved how it smelled while it was cooking.

Week: 5 Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

Oct. 7-11

We read the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault. Students now have the opportunity to practice retelling the story using felt palm trees and velcro letters.

At Ranchlands School, we refer to The Pillars of Care to help guide our conversations around how to be a respectful student. Below is an image that can be used to have your child explain what the pillars mean to them.

We had our first visit to our school library this week. Students are able to choose one book to take home to read with their family. When you are done with the book, please have your child bring it back to school before the next library visit. The AM class visits the library on Thursdays. The PM class visits the library on Tuesdays.

All Kindergartens have a grade 4 buddy. We will meet with our buddies on Wednesdays. We will read books, draw pictures and play co-operatives games together.

Next week:
- Decorate the letter that begins our name to put up on our own coconut tree
- Copying letters and other print (Write around the Room)
- Buddies on Wednesday
- Library visits (AM Thursday/PM Tuesday)
- Friday we will make apple sauce. We will send a notice on Wednesday asking for students to bring in a baggie of cut up apple if families are able

Week 4: Every Story Has A Star!

September 30 - October 4

This week we met with our story teller, Jeff Stockton, to talk about how stories always have:
- A star
- A place
- ! Something exciting

We created a mosaic leaf. Students tore pieces of orange paper and glued them inside the leaf outline. Tearing paper is a way to strengthen hands.

Students have now learned all of the different zones from the Zones Of Regulation. We read a story about a girl who was in the red zone. Ask your child what they remember from the story. Students also shared about a time that they were very angry.

Next week:
- Cutting straight lines and curved lines
- Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault
- Friday, October 10th NO SCHOOL
